Numbering controls you actually get
Six placements
Bottom or top — left, center, or right. Default is bottom center, the usual print footer spot.
Arabic or Roman
Use 1, 2, 3 for most docs, or lowercase / uppercase Roman (i, ii, iii / I, II, III) for front matter style.
Start page & first number
Skip a cover with “Start from page,” and set “Pages first number” when the PDF should begin at 5 or continue a binder sequence.
Margin size
Small, recommended, or big inset so numbers clear binders and punch holes. Numbers draw in Helvetica at 12 pt (black) for consistent readability.

Where can I place the page numbers?
Top or bottom — left, center, or right (six options). Bottom center is the default.
Can I use Roman numerals?
Yes. Choose lowercase (i, ii, iii) or uppercase (I, II, III), or stick with Arabic 1, 2, 3.
How do I skip the cover page?
Set “Start from page” to 2 (or later). Earlier pages stay unnumbered.
Can numbering start at a number other than 1?
Yes. “Pages first number” sets the value on the first numbered page (useful for continuations).
Can I change the font family and size freely?
Numbers are drawn in Helvetica at 12 pt. You control position, format, margin, and starting values — not a full desktop publisher font menu.
How large can the PDF be for page numbering?
Up to 25 MB for a single PDF upload.
Is this the same as adding a watermark?
No. Watermarks overlay branding or status text/images. This tool adds a sequential page counter.

Should I number before or after merging?
